Understanding Dementia
The term “dementia” is used to describe a group of disorders that affect memory and the brain. Dementia includes a loss of intellectual function that may include reasoning, judgment, thinking, and remembering.
This loss affects personality, behavior, and mental function, and those who are diagnosed with this condition will have severe changes in their daily functioning. Many people confuse Alzheimer’s Disease with dementia, and they believe these two terms are synonymous. The truth is in fact that Alzheimer’s Disease is a type of dementia, and according to the Alzheimer’s Association, it accounts for 60 to 80 percent of all dementia cases.
